Guide Gear Scopes

I'm inclined to say they are probably crap ... but that's just a gut feeling...

Backstory: My buddy just bought a DPMS .308 Varmiter... Bull bbl.. Nice weapon. Heavy as all gitout - but nice. He called me in a *panic* last night before he bought it- said he wanted me to come take a look at it to see if it was worth the Grand that was being asked for it.
Well... I had a pretty good idea from the description he gave me that this deal would be a no brainer if the gun wasn't a lemon.

I figured they probably go for OOOOohhh bout 12-1300 these days...

Yeah... Strange days huh...My #$(*^%^@ buddy Doesn't have a clue.
I looked up going rates this MORNING after he did the deal.

But like I said - Last night I had a pretty good feeling about it.
I checked the bore... bolt. Looked like it was fresh outta the box.
Asked the seller how many rounds he put through it--23.
I said "buddy, ain't nuttin wrong w/ this weapon. Heck, I want one!!"

The only thing is the Guide Gear Scope... Illuminated range finding 12X..

Are they Junk? Look TactiKewl... But I dunno- My gut tells me they are junk.

At any rate- He still came out on top... Those rifles are fetchin' one hell of a premium these days.

I don't have any experience with the 'guide gear' brand, but I'm sure it's a store brand, I think maybe bass pro?

I'd say yes, junk. Always be prepared to spend a comparable amount on scope/rings as on the rifle. It's kinda like having maypops on a formula one racer. Weakest link and all.

Yeah it's the Sportsman's guide brand...

I just wondered who made their stuff...

I know that often Retailers will work out a deal w/ name brand manufacturers where the manufacturer will put the Retailer's brand on the product... Think Wal-Mart "equate" for instance.

Thanks for the input. Pretty much what I was thinkin.

Here's a link to a thread at THR that says at least some of the GG scopes are Barska. I've had a couple of Barska cheapo scopes and they were cheap Chicom junk.

I bought almost that same DPMS varmint upper a few years ago for $550 and us it on my bushmaster lower. I put cheap Simmons 44mag 6-24 scope on it and shot a groundhog in the head at a laser measured 270 yds.

I was told all scopes, except for the really high dollar big names, come from the same factory in hong kong with different names slapped on them.
Tasco, simmons, bushnell, guide gear, etc. same same.

I would go with a 42 to 50mm red dot sight.I put a Hammers on my .444 Marlin and it works great. Stay away from the BSA sights they don't last.
